The Other is cast in a 3D-printed master mold that holds water-soluble BVOH inserts defining 13 internal chambers. Each insert is coated with a thin glycerin layer to keep silicone from seeping into the structure. The inserts are fixed in place with PLA support grids, and silicone is poured in staged passes at varying angles. Once the material gels, the PLA supports are removed, the mold is closed, and the remaining cavity is backfilled with silicone. After curing, The Other is demolded and immersed in hot water until the BVOH dissolves, leaving organically shaped voids.
A compressor and vacuum pump supply positive and negative pressure routed to 13 chamber manifolds with inlet and outlet valves. Chamber pressure is sensed and touch is interpreted as shifts in the internal pressure to generate responsive motion patterns. The result is a pneumatic system with autonomous movements that animate The Other.
