The dial of the model Berlin is pared back to essentials, yet still offers day and date displays. The underside of the gold-plated case is engraved with Hamburg’s historic Berlin station, which from its opening in 1857 served for 46 years as the western terminus of the line and enabled the “fast” nine-hour journey between the two cities. Inside, the quartz movement by Japanese manufacturer Miyota works just as reliably as the steam locomotive – although much more quietly.
